I've always felt a close connection to Earth Spirits, but it wasn't until I embarked on creating the Faerie's Nature Oracle that I had a reason to work with them closely, and on a regular basis. (A few of my guides are Earth Spirits - Faeries, but that's different. Those interactions are a little more formal, and those Spirits have built-in relationships with me.)
Opening myself up to the wider realm of Earth Spirits was something that I always wanted to do! And the oracle project was a wonderful gateway. Along the way I learned some interesting things.
1. They don't like incense.
At least, the Faeries that hang around me really don't like it. This is a slight problem because I really love incense. It helps me to concentrate. It calms me down. When I have a project to work on, the first thing I do is either light a candle, or light some incense. Working on the guidebook was very much a project, but I also wanted to keep my the Fae near for input and guidance.
That didn't work. Every time I lit incense, and sat down to work with those Spirits, the incense stick would be snuffed out. And no, it wasn't a coincidence. I tried the same sticks at different times on the same day. Sometimes while I was doing other things, sometimes while I worked with the Fae. Each and every time it was a fae-related endeavor...the incense went out.
They urged me to use stones for concentration and motivation instead. So I did. Moss agate, green aventurine, and chiastolite. Lesson learned...I don't even try to use the incense anymore if I know they're going to be present.
2. You can promise a firstborn child to them.
But it's not how you think. The Faeries aren't going to come and pluck your children out of their cribs (like the Goblin King, Jareth), but they will sponsor a child, and act as a guide. Even though it's not as harmful as I originally thought, this is not something that I recommend. Check out the blog article I linked to get the full story.
3. They like portals.
In Mediumship, when I want to get up-close and personal with a Spirit to communicate with them, I pull down a channel of light for them to sit or stand (or float) in. Well, I was getting ready to talk to Faeries, and I got the urge to do something different. Instead of calling down light from the clouds, and source, I visualized a portal opening up next to me. I saw it swirling in every shade of green. Opaque, but dense enough that I couldn't see through it. I could feel through it though, in the same way that you can feel the warmth and light emanating from a house when you get up to its front door. So, if you want to work with the Fae, try giving them an easy passageway to get closer to you by opening a portal. They are in the earth-realm anyway, and closer to our own vibration than most other Spirits are.
4. They care deeply for the health of the earth.
While writing the guidebook for my oracle deck, I channeled bits and pieces of the guidance that is in there. This was a wonderful experience. Seeing my cards through the eyes of the Fae opened up whole new depths of understanding. At the same time, I had to walk a fine line with them. Very often they would go off on tangents about how the ocean is polluted, or how the earth was getting sick. I knew their messages were important, but they didn't belong in the description of an oracle card. I made a compromise. At the end of the guidebook is an open letter from the Fae, to all of us. I hope I've done them some justice in sharing their perspective.
5. Their energy is truly magical.
To me, deceased people feel just like people. Spirit guides feel like special people. Like people with a little extra zing of energy to them.. Angels often feel big, very warm, and a little intimidating. Ascended masters feel very intimidating and powerful. Lightbeings are plain-old weird (no offense, guys).
But Faeries. They feel magical. They feel the way that the earth feels when it's so perfect, and beautiful, that you can't help but soak it all in. Like sunlight filtered through trees in the forest. Or hidden streams. Or flower petals drifting down from cherry blossoms. Being around Faeries feels like you're in the presence of the earth made (more) animate.
I'm looking forward to learning, and sharing, so much more.
