When I sit down to write, 90% of the time I will light a small candle or stick of incense. I do this to make the space a bit more sacred, and to bring in fire and air for inspiration.
Before I perform a reading (tarot or mediumship), I wash my hands. This is to literally clean them, but also to symbolically clean myself of anything icky. It helps to cement my intention of going into a reading with nothing personal or gross hanging around to taint it.
These things that I do are not superstitious. They're rituals.
Rituals build familiarity and comfort. But more importantly they build energy - and energy makes the world go round, it helps our dreams become manifest.
In spiritual practices there is a very real need to build up positive energy, but by no means do you need a spiritual precedent. Ritual can help you to build a better life in hundreds of little ways. All it takes is a small gesture, and an intention.
- A ritual for clearer thought and refreshment.
Action: When you pour a glass of water, first choose a glass or mug that you enjoy looking at and holding. Then, pour the water slowly and actually take a moment to listen to the sound of the water sloshing into the glass.
Intention: When you drink, the clarity of the water results in clarity of thought (or emotion - or action - your choice!).
- A ritual for abundance.
Action: When you receive money, or when you spend/give money, don't let it be automatic. Acknowledge the sum of it.
Intention: When receiving money, infuse it with gratitude. Give a shout-out of thanks to yourself for earning it or finding it. Give thanks to your higher-power-or-Spirit of choice for helping to send it your way. When spending money, bless it. Try to imagine how useful it will be to people who receive it down the line, how happy it will make someone who uses it to pay their bills, or buy themselves a cup of coffee. See money and abundance being given and received as easily and as positively as compliments and smiles.
- A ritual for self-love.
Action: When you do anything involving your appearance. For example we'll say when you get dressed. Take a moment to appreciate the clothing! Find something you love about it (or find another piece of clothing) whether that's the color, the texture, the warmth, or the pattern.
Intention: The clothes you choose and put on are a way for you to honor yourself and reflect out to the world your beauty. Think of it like decorating an altar or decorating a room. Want to feel a little extra special? If you always forget to put on a necklace, or earrings, or a watch, do that today. The "extra" ornamentation amplifies how lovely you are to yourself first, and to others - second.
What is it that you want out of today? Decide. Make a gesture. Expect change.
(Are there any rituals that you've built over the years? I would love it if you shared - just comment below!)
